Umm Sukaynah al-Albaaniyyah said: I asked my father (Shaykh al-Albaanee):
"I read that some of the scholars would cut off all other actions and devout themselves to the Qur'aan alone when Ramadaan entered. This is in-spite of them being the from people of knowledge who give religious verdicts to the people. They would cut off all other actions even til' the point of cutting off giving religious verdicts. Is this correct? Should I designate this month for the (reading of the) Qur'aan therefore leaving off the reading of the Ahaadeeth (Prophetic narrations), their explanation, and the religious lessons"?
He said in his response:
"This designation (of only reciting the Qur'aan and leaving off the other matters in the month of Ramadaan) has no origin for it in the Sunnah. However that which is in the Sunnah and well known from the two authentic collections of the Prophetic narrations (Saheeh al-Bukhaaree and Saheeh Muslim) is abundant recitation of the Qur'aan in the month of Ramadaan1. As for designating this month for the recitation of the Qur'aan alone without doing any other act of worship like, the seeking of knowledge, the teaching of Hadeeth (Prophetic narrations), clarifying them and explaining them; this is something which has no origin for it (in the Sunnah of the Prophet). Also the matter of giving charity and doing good to the people will enter (into the actions that are to be left off if the month of Ramadaan is specific for the recitation of the Qur'aan alone) to other than that. The cutting off (of all the other acts of worship) for the recitation of the Qur'aan ( alone in the month of Ramadaan is a matter that) has no origin for it. That which does have an origin for it (with regards to the recitation of Qur'aan in the month of Ramadaan) is the recitation of the Qur'aan in abundance".
1.That which Shaykh al-Albaanee (may Allaah have mercy upon him) is pointing to in the two Saheehs is the narration of Ibn Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with them both) "The Messenger of Allaah was the most generous of the people. The time that he was most generous was in Ramadaan when Jib'reel would meet him every night and studying the Qur'aan with him. The Messenger of Allaah was most generous and quick in doing the good when Jib'reel would meet him than the sent wind" (Agreed Upon)
Imaam an-Nawawee said: Our companions (i.e the scholars of the Shaafi'ee Madhab) said: "The Sunnah is to recite the Qur'aan in abundance and studying it in Ramadaan. The person recites it to other than himself and other than him recite it to him based upon the previous narration of Ibn Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with them both). al-Haafith Ibn Rajab said: "In this narration there's an evidence for the recommendation of reciting the Qur'aan in abundance in the month of Ramadaan" (La-taa-if al-Ma-aa-rif page 169).
May Allaah allow us to understand the words of our noble scholars and practice that which we learn, Aameen.
